ne thing that has interested me recently, both from my personal observation as a counsellor and as a family member, is the ability that an individual has to stay with reality as opposed to something that may be completely fictional. Freud came up with the concept of ‘ego defence’. This is a well-used technique that as individuals we use to protect ourselves from angst. In effect it is the mind’s way of taking away personal responsibility. Common examples of this are denial deflection and projection. As you can imagine, if everyone is doing that it could cause a huge amount of confusion; not just for the individual but also for all those who are around them. I believe it is this human tendency that causes huge problems that I will explore later.
